The taxes desk

Tax software, ranked by what filing season actually feels like.

Every spring the same software companies pretend their "free" tiers are free. Sometimes they are. Often they aren't. We file three real returns through each product every year — including a self-employed schedule C — and rank by total cost, accuracy and how often the interview asked the right next question.

Reader questions

Taxes, plainly answered.

Do I really need to pay for tax software?
Often, no. For a typical W-2 employee taking the standard deduction, Cash App Taxes and the IRS Free File alliance products can file federal and state for $0 — accurately. The paid tiers earn their fees only when you have complications (real-estate income, multi-state, business income).
Should I itemise or take the standard deduction?
For most filers, the standard deduction wins ($14,600 single / $29,200 married filing jointly in 2024 — adjusted each year). Itemising is usually only worthwhile if you have a mortgage on a higher-value home, large medical bills, or substantial charitable giving.
Are tax-prep fees deductible?
For most W-2 filers, no longer — the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act eliminated that miscellaneous itemised deduction. Self-employed filers can still deduct tax-prep fees attributable to Schedule C as a business expense.
What if I can't pay what I owe?
File anyway, on time. Penalties for late filing are about ten times worse than penalties for late payment. The IRS offers payment plans (short-term and installment) that you can set up online without speaking to anyone.
